Equine Pregnancy Diagnosis
The choice of appropriate test is
dependant upon the time since the last service.
| Test |
Time From Last
Service |
| Progesterone |
18 to 25 days |
| PMSG |
45 to 100 days (most
reliable 60 to 80 days) |
| Oestrone Sulphate |
100 days to term |
Progesterone
Progesterone may be used for the
early diagnosis of pregnancy, but only indicates the presence of
a maintained corpus luteum, and not necessarily the presence of a
conceptus.
Protocol requirements:
- Single serum or heparin
plasma sample (0.5 ml)
PMSG
Pregnant mares' serum gonadotrophin
is produced by the endometrial cups from approximately 45 to 100
days of gestation.
Protocol requirements:
- Single serum sample (0.5 ml)
Oestrone Sulphate
Oestrone sulphate arises from the
foeto-placental unit from about 80 days of gestation and from 100
days is an excellent indicator of the presence of a viable
foetus. Serum oestrone sulphate has largely replaced urinary
oestrogens (Cuboni test).
Protocol requirements:
- Single serum sample (0.5 ml)
