Equine Reproductive Screening

Contagious Equine Metritis, Klebsiella pneumoniae and Pseudomonas aeruginosa

IDEXX Laboratories, Ltd. is an approved laboratory for CEM, Klebsiella pneumoniae and Pseudomonas aeruginosa testing. Examination includes CEMO, Klebsiella, Pseudomonas, sentest if necessary and issue of certificate.

Protocol requirements:

  • Single or multiple swabs (labelled with site)
  • It is recommended that swabs are taken from multiple sites, since it is possible to find mares with negative cervical swabs carrying Klebsiella aerogenes in the vestibule, urethra or clitoris

Swabs in appropriate media are available free of charge and discounted prices are available for multiple swabs from the same animal.

Equine Viral Arteritis

For EVA, the current recommendations (Horserace Betting Levy Board) are that:

"After 1 January in any year all UNVACCINATED STALLIONS AND TEASERS should be serologically tested. Do not use them for mating and teasing until results are available."

"In any breeding season, the safest way to avoid risk is to blood test all mares within 4 weeks before mating. Do not mate the mare until the results are available."

Protocol requirements:

  • Single serum sample (0.5ml)

Refer to current price list or telephone the laboratory (01937 544000) for test prices and any further information.
