Considerations in Testing Endocrine Function
The optimal diagnostic test for any condition should be safe,
practical, inexpensive and accurate as defined by its sensitivity and
specificity.
Sensitivity is a test's ability to identify animals with a
particular disease as compared to the "gold standard" test for that
condition.
Specificity is the test's ability to correctly identify animals
that do not have the disease. False positive results reduce the
specificity of a test.
Technical factors, such as analytical accuracy, sample handling and
storage, may adversely affect sensitivity and specificity. It is very
important to adhere to the test protocol supplied by the laboratory
undertaking analysis of the sample.
