Bluetongue virus (BTV)

The IDEXX RealPCR BTV serotypes RNA mixes are used for the identification of different specific serotypes of bluetongue virus (BTV) RNA when combined with the shared reagents of the IDEXX RealPCR platform. Samples can be tested simultaneously with any other IDEXX RealPCR reagents using shared reagents and a single real-time PCR program. Each serotype mix contains primers and probes for the detection of a certain BTV serotype.

An internal control is also part of each mix and is based on the detection of endogenous ruminant (bovine, ovine and caprine) RNA present in the sample and is referred to as the internal sample control (ISC).

About Bluetongue

Bluetongue is a viral disease affecting bovines, ovines, caprines and wild ruminants. The disease is transmitted by an insect from the genus Culicoïdes and clinical signs can be associated with intense inflammation, high fever, tongue and face congestion and edemas, ulcerations and mucosal hemorrhages. The disease is caused by the bluetongue virus (BTV), a segmented RNA orbivirus from the reoviridae family. Multiple serotypes have been identified.

Early detection and differentiation of BTV serotypes using real time PCR can limit the spread of diseases before animals are moved between regions or countries
